Chin Implant Surgery in Pune: Bringing a Small Chin Forward
Chin implant surgery places a shaped, solid implant, usually silicone, over the chin bone to bring a small or receding chin forward. It is inserted through a short cut under the chin or inside the lower lip in about an hour. It improves the profile and balance with the nose and neck, with most swelling settling in a few weeks.

What is a chin implant?
A chin implant is a solid, shaped piece of medical-grade material, most often silicone, placed over the front of the chin bone. It makes the chin project further forward, and sometimes look slightly wider or longer, depending on the implant shape.
The chin has a large effect on facial balance. A small or receding chin can make the nose look bigger, the neck look less defined and the lower face look weak in profile. Chin augmentation is one of the procedures used to balance the face, often together with rhinoplasty.
Who may benefit, and how is suitability assessed?
A chin implant may suit you if:
- your chin looks small or set back in profile;
- your bite is normal, or has already been treated;
- you are an adult whose face has finished growing;
- you are in good health and have realistic expectations.
The doctor will look at your face from the front and side, and may take photographs to plan the size and shape. They will check your teeth and bite, because a bite problem or a very small lower jaw needs a different treatment. A full neck from fat may be treated with double chin correction at the same time. Tell the doctor about gum or tooth infection, smoking and medicines.
What are the options for a small chin?
| Option | What it can do | Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Chin implant | Lasting forward projection in one operation | Implant risks: shifting, infection, bone pressure |
| Sliding genioplasty | Moves the chin bone; allows larger or vertical changes | A bigger operation |
| Dermal fillers or fat grafting | Add some projection without an implant | Temporary or less predictable; small changes only |
| Orthodontic or jaw surgery | Corrects the bite and jaw position | Long treatment; a specialist plan |
| No treatment | Accept current profile | None |
How is a chin implant placed?
- Planning: the implant size and shape are chosen, using photographs and the shape of your chin.
- Anaesthesia: local anaesthetic with sedation, or general anaesthesia.
- The cut: either a short cut in the crease under the chin, or a cut inside the lower lip, where there is no visible scar.
- Placement: a snug pocket is made over the bone and the implant is placed and centred. It may be fixed with a stitch or small screw so it cannot move.
- Closure and dressing: the cut is closed with fine stitches and a supportive tape dressing may be placed over the chin.
How should you prepare, and what should you ask?
- Stop smoking well before and after surgery.
- Have any tooth or gum infection treated first.
- Tell the doctor about all medicines and supplements that affect bleeding.
Questions to ask:
- Would an implant, a genioplasty or a filler suit my chin better?
- Which implant size and shape do you suggest, and why?
- Where will the cut be?
- What happens if the implant shifts or becomes infected?
What is recovery like?
| Time | What to expect for most patients |
|---|---|
| Days 1-3 | Swelling, tightness and some numbness of the chin and lower lip; soft food; tape dressing |
| Week 1 | Many return to work; stitches removed or dissolving |
| Weeks 2-4 | Most swelling settles; avoid contact sport and pressure on the chin |
| Months 2-3 | Final shape clear; feeling returns |
What are the risks of a chin implant?
- Swelling, bruising and temporary numbness of the chin and lower lip.
- Infection, which may need antibiotics and sometimes removal of the implant.
- Implant shifting or asymmetry, sometimes needing adjustment.
- Bone change under the implant, usually minor.
- Nerve injury causing longer-lasting numbness of the lip, uncommon.
- Unhappy result with the size or shape, needing exchange.
Contact the doctor for increasing pain, swelling, redness, fever or discharge.
What results can you expect?
The chin looks stronger and better balanced with the nose and neck, especially in profile. The change is visible straight away and settles over two to three months as swelling goes down.
What affects the cost of chin implant surgery in Pune?
- Implant type and size.
- Approach, through the mouth or under the chin.
- Anaesthesia and facility.
- Combined procedures, such as rhinoplasty or chin liposuction.
- Medicines and follow-up visits.
Chin implant surgery for cosmetic reasons is usually not covered by insurance.
Questions about chin implant
Is a chin implant permanent?
The implant is designed to stay in place long term and does not dissolve. It can be removed or exchanged later if needed, for example if it shifts or you want a different size.
Chin implant or chin filler?
Dermal fillers can add some projection without surgery, but they are temporary and less suited to larger changes. An implant gives a fixed, lasting change in one operation.
What is the difference between a chin implant and a sliding genioplasty?
An implant sits over the bone. A sliding genioplasty cuts and moves the chin bone itself, which allows larger changes in height and position but is a bigger operation. The right choice depends on the shape of your chin and jaw.
Will a chin implant fix my bite?
No. An implant changes the look of the chin only. A bite problem or a very small lower jaw needs orthodontic and sometimes jaw surgery, which is planned with a dental or maxillofacial specialist.
Can a chin implant be combined with rhinoplasty?
Yes. A small chin can make the nose look larger, so the two are often planned together to balance the profile. See rhinoplasty.
Will the scar show?
Through the mouth, there is no scar on the skin. Under the chin, the short scar sits in the natural crease and is usually hard to see once healed.
