Dimple Creation in Pune: Making a Cheek Dimple from Inside the Mouth
Dimple creation, or dimpleplasty, makes a small cheek dimple by joining the underside of the skin to the cheek muscle with a stitch placed from inside the mouth. It takes about 30 minutes per side under local anaesthesia and leaves no scar on the face. The dimple is visible at rest at first and settles over weeks.

What is dimple creation?
A natural cheek dimple forms where a band of muscle fibres is attached to the underside of the skin. When you smile, the muscle pulls on that spot and the skin dips. Dimple creation copies this: a small amount of tissue is removed from inside the cheek, and a dissolvable stitch joins the underside of the skin to the muscle at the chosen point.
The whole procedure is done through the inside of the mouth, so there is no scar on the face. For the background, risks and what patients often ask, see dimple creation surgery explained.
Who may benefit, and how is suitability assessed?
You may be suitable if you:
- would like a dimple on one or both cheeks;
- are in good health with healthy gums and teeth;
- have realistic expectations about how deep and lasting the dimple will be.
The doctor will look at your face at rest and when smiling, check the thickness of the cheeks and the inside of the mouth, and ask about mouth ulcers, smoking, keloids and medicines. Very full cheeks may give a fainter dimple; some people combine dimple creation with buccal fat removal.
How is the dimple position chosen?
The usual site is where a line down from the outer corner of the eye meets a line across from the corner of the mouth. The exact point is marked with you smiling in front of a mirror, so it sits naturally in your face. You can choose one dimple or two.
How is dimple creation performed?
- Marking: the dimple point is marked on the skin while you smile.
- Local anaesthetic: the cheek is numbed from inside and outside.
- Inside the mouth: a small cut is made in the lining of the cheek opposite the mark, and a tiny piece of tissue is removed to make space.
- The stitch: a dissolvable stitch joins the underside of the skin to the muscle and is tied so the dimple forms.
- Closure: the cut inside the mouth is closed with dissolvable stitches.
How should you prepare, and what should you ask?
- Have a dental check if your gums or teeth are troubling you.
- Stop smoking, which slows healing inside the mouth.
- Plan soft food for a few days.
Questions to ask:
- Where will the dimple sit, and will it suit my face?
- How deep will it be at rest and when smiling?
- What happens if it fades or looks uneven?
What is recovery like?
| Time | What to expect for most patients |
|---|---|
| Days 1-3 | Swelling and tightness in the cheek; a dimple visible at rest; soft food and mouth rinses |
| Week 1 | Back to work and normal routine; avoid hard chewing on that side |
| Weeks 1-2 | The cut inside the mouth heals; dissolvable stitches fall out |
| Months 1-3 | The dimple softens and shows mainly when smiling |
Keep the mouth clean with gentle brushing and the rinse your doctor recommends.
What are the risks of dimple creation?
- Swelling and tenderness, usually settling within a week or two.
- Fading or loss of the dimple, the most common reason for a repeat procedure.
- Asymmetry between the two sides.
- A dimple that is too deep or shows at rest for longer than expected.
- Infection inside the mouth, uncommon.
- Injury to a duct or nerve in the cheek, rare when the position is carefully planned.
Contact the doctor for increasing pain, swelling, fever or discharge inside the mouth.
What results can you expect?
Most people have a natural-looking dimple that appears when they smile. Results vary: some dimples become shallower over time, and a small proportion of people choose a repeat procedure.
What affects the cost of dimple creation in Pune?
- One or two dimples.
- Combined procedures, such as buccal fat removal.
- Anaesthesia, facility and follow-up visits.
Dimple creation is cosmetic and usually not covered by insurance.
Questions about dimple creation
Are created dimples permanent?
Many last for years, but in some people the dimple becomes shallower or fades, especially in the first months. Published series report that a small proportion of patients have a repeat procedure, most often because the dimple is too faint.
Will the dimple show when I am not smiling?
At first, yes. A dimple at rest is expected for a few weeks while swelling and the stitch settle. It then usually appears mainly when you smile.
Is there a scar on the face?
No. The small cut is inside the cheek, and it heals within about a week to ten days. Nothing is cut on the outside of the face.
Can I choose where the dimple goes?
Yes, within limits. The usual position is on a line down from the outer corner of the eye, level with the corner of the mouth, but the spot is marked with you smiling so it suits your face. One or both cheeks can be done.
Can a dimple be reversed?
Early on, the stitch can sometimes be released if you are unhappy with the result. Later, once scar tissue has formed, reversal is more difficult. Think carefully about position and whether you want one or two dimples before surgery.
Can dimple creation be combined with buccal fat removal?
Yes, both are done from inside the mouth and can be done in one sitting. See buccal fat removal.
