Lip Reduction Surgery in Pune: Reducing a Large or Protruding Lip

Lip reduction surgery, or reduction cheiloplasty, makes a large, thick or everted lip smaller by removing a strip of tissue from its inner, wet side. The cut is hidden inside the mouth, so there is no scar on the face. It is usually day care under local anaesthesia, and swelling settles over a few weeks.

  • Lip reduction explainedDr. Sushrut explains lip reduction surgery: a day-care procedure under local anaesthesia for the upper or lower lip, and how swelling settles.
  • Lip reduction (Hindi)Procedure, time and recovery for upper and lower lip reduction, explained in Hindi.

What is lip reduction surgery?

Lip reduction surgery reduces the size of the upper lip, the lower lip or both. A horizontal strip of lining and some tissue beneath it are removed from the inner, wet side of the lip. When the cut is closed, the lip rolls inwards slightly, so less of the red part shows and the lip looks thinner and less protruding.

Some people are born with large or turned-out lips; others notice them after injury, an inflammatory condition or permanent filler. The procedure aims for lips that look in proportion with the nose, chin and teeth, not for the thinnest possible lips.

Who may benefit, and how is suitability assessed?

Lip reduction may suit you if:

  • one or both lips look large or turned out compared with the rest of your face;
  • the lips feel heavy, or the lower lip drops;
  • you have lumps from permanent filler that cannot be dissolved;
  • you are in good health and have realistic expectations.

The doctor will look at the lips at rest and when smiling, and check the teeth and bite. Protruding front teeth or jaws push the lips forward; in that case orthodontic or jaw treatment may help more than lip surgery. Sometimes a small chin implant or rhinoplasty improves facial balance as well. Tell the doctor about cold sores, smoking and medicines.

How is lip reduction performed?

  1. Marking: the amount to remove is marked with you sitting up, keeping the natural lip shape.
  2. Local anaesthetic: the lip is numbed with an injection.
  3. Removal: a strip of lining and tissue is removed from the inner side of the lip. Special patterns, such as the “crab claw” design, can shape the central part of the lip.
  4. Closure: the cut is closed with fine dissolvable stitches inside the mouth.
  5. Aftercare: a cold pack is applied, and you go home the same day.

How should you prepare, and what should you ask?

  • Stop smoking well before and after surgery.
  • Tell the doctor about cold sores; preventive medicine may be advised.
  • Have soft, cool food and a straw available.

Questions to ask:

  • How much will be removed, and how will my lips look in profile?
  • Is my lip size caused by my teeth or jaw?
  • How long will swelling and numbness last?

What is recovery like?

Time What to expect for most patients
Days 1-3 Marked swelling and tightness; cold packs, soft cool food, careful mouth care
Week 1 Swelling begins to settle; many return to work; avoid stretching the mouth wide
Weeks 2-3 Dissolvable stitches fall out; most swelling has gone
Months 2-3 Lips soften and the final shape is clear

What are the risks of lip reduction?

  • Swelling and bruising, expected.
  • Numbness or altered feeling in the lip, usually temporary.
  • Asymmetry or an uneven lip line, sometimes needing a touch-up.
  • Over-reduction, which is difficult to correct, so a careful plan matters.
  • Infection or the wound opening, uncommon.
  • A lump of scar tissue inside the lip, usually softening with time.

Contact the doctor for increasing pain, swelling, fever or discharge.

What results can you expect?

The lips look smaller and more in proportion with the face, with the scar hidden inside the mouth. The change is long-lasting, and most people are back to normal activities within a week or two.

What affects the cost of lip reduction surgery in Pune?

  • One lip or both.
  • Combined procedures, such as a chin implant.
  • Anaesthesia, facility, medicines and follow-up visits.

Lip reduction is cosmetic and usually not covered by insurance.

Questions about lip reduction

Will lip reduction leave a scar?

The scar sits on the inner, wet side of the lip, where it is hidden when the mouth is closed. Done this way, there is no scar on the skin of the face.

Can the upper and lower lip be reduced together?

Yes. One or both lips can be reduced in the same sitting, depending on which looks out of proportion.

How long does swelling last after lip reduction?

The lips are very swollen for the first few days. Most swelling settles over two to three weeks, and the final shape is clear after two to three months.

Is lip reduction permanent?

The tissue removed does not grow back, so the reduction is long-lasting. The lips continue to change slowly with age, as they would anyway.

Can lip reduction reverse lip filler?

Hyaluronic acid filler can usually be dissolved with an injection, which is tried first. Surgery may be considered for permanent fillers or lips that remain large after dissolving.

Will lip reduction affect my smile or speech?

Lip movement usually returns to normal once swelling settles. Numbness or a tight feeling is common for a few weeks. A careful plan avoids removing too much, which could affect the lip's shape or movement.
