Labiaplasty in Pune: Labia Minora Reduction

Labiaplasty is surgery to reduce or reshape the labia minora, the inner folds of skin on either side of the vaginal opening. It is chosen when large or uneven labia cause rubbing, discomfort in clothes, exercise or intercourse, or self-consciousness. It is usually day care under local anaesthesia, with dissolvable stitches, and swelling settles over a few weeks.

What is labiaplasty?

The vulva has two pairs of folds, or lips: the outer labia majora and the thinner inner labia minora. Labiaplasty usually means reducing the labia minora so they no longer hang well beyond the outer lips, or making the two sides more even.

Labia differ greatly from woman to woman, and long or uneven labia minora are normal. Some women have labia that are pulled, twisted or rubbed during walking, cycling, exercise, tight clothing or intercourse, or that make hygiene during periods difficult. Others feel self-conscious about how they look. Labiaplasty can help in both situations, but it should be a considered choice, not a response to pressure from a partner or from images online.

Who may benefit, and how is suitability assessed?

You may be suitable if you are an adult, in good health, and have:

  • labia minora that cause rubbing, chafing or discomfort;
  • marked difference in size between the two sides;
  • long-standing self-consciousness about the appearance of the labia;
  • realistic expectations about the result.

The consultation is private and confidential. The doctor will ask about your symptoms, periods, childbirth plans, smoking, diabetes and medicines, and will check for infection or skin conditions that should be treated first. Concern about genital appearance that is causing great distress is also discussed gently, because surgery may not be the right answer for everyone.

What are the options?

Option What it can do Limitations
Labiaplasty, trim technique Reduces the protruding edge; simple and predictable Removes the natural darker edge
Labiaplasty, wedge technique Reduces length while keeping the natural edge Small risk of the join opening
Clitoral hood reduction Reduces excess skin around the clitoral hood, often with labiaplasty Done only when needed
Comfortable clothing, barrier creams Reduce rubbing and irritation Do not change size
Reassurance and no treatment Many women decide against surgery once they know their labia are normal None

Vaginal looseness is a different concern, treated with vaginoplasty or pelvic floor treatment rather than labiaplasty.

How is labiaplasty performed?

  1. Planning and marking: the amount to remove is marked with you lying comfortably, keeping the two sides balanced and preserving enough tissue.
  2. Anaesthesia: local anaesthetic numbs the area; sedation may be added.
  3. Reduction: the excess tissue is removed by the trim or wedge method, avoiding the clitoris and the sensitive edge where possible.
  4. Closure: the edges are joined with fine dissolvable stitches.
  5. Dressing: a soft pad is placed, and you go home the same day.

How should you prepare, and what should you ask?

  • Plan the operation away from your period if possible.
  • Stop smoking, which slows healing.
  • Tell the doctor about blood thinners and supplements that affect bleeding.
  • Have loose cotton underwear, pads and cold packs ready at home.

Questions to ask:

  • Which technique suits my labia, and why?
  • How much will be removed, and will the two sides look even?
  • When can I return to work, exercise and intercourse?
  • What happens if one side heals differently?

What is recovery like?

Time What to expect for most patients
Days 1-3 Swelling, bruising and soreness; rest, cold packs, loose underwear
Week 1 Many return to desk work; gentle washing after using the toilet; avoid tight clothing
Weeks 2-3 Stitches dissolve; swelling continues to settle
Weeks 4-6 Usually cleared for exercise, cycling and intercourse
Months 3-6 Final shape and softness

What are the risks of labiaplasty?

  • Swelling and bruising, expected and usually settling within weeks.
  • Bleeding or a collection of blood, uncommon.
  • Infection, uncommon.
  • The wound opening, more likely with the wedge technique, sometimes needing repair.
  • Asymmetry or an uneven edge, sometimes needing a small revision.
  • Over-reduction, which is difficult to correct, so a careful plan matters.
  • Changes in sensation or painful scarring, uncommon.

Contact the clinic for heavy bleeding, increasing pain or swelling, fever or a smelly discharge.

What results can you expect?

Most women find the labia no longer rub or catch, and many feel more comfortable and confident. Reviews of published studies report high satisfaction, although good long-term studies are limited. The result is long-lasting, but the area can change again with childbirth and age.

What affects the cost of labiaplasty in Pune?

  • Technique, and whether clitoral hood reduction is added.
  • Anaesthesia and facility.
  • Combined procedures, such as vaginoplasty.
  • Medicines and follow-up visits.

Labiaplasty for appearance is usually not covered by insurance.

Questions about labiaplasty

Is labiaplasty normal to want?

Labia vary widely in size, shape and colour, and differences between the two sides are common and normal. Some women have labia that cause physical discomfort; others feel self-conscious. Both are reasons people ask about labiaplasty, and the consultation is the place to talk about them openly.

Is labiaplasty painful?

The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, so the operation itself is not felt. Afterwards there is swelling and soreness for several days, eased with painkillers, cold packs and loose clothing.

Will labiaplasty affect sensation or intercourse?

The aim is to remove excess tissue while keeping the sensitive edge and the clitoris untouched. Most women report no loss of sensation, and some find intercourse more comfortable. Changes in sensation and painful scarring are possible risks and are discussed before surgery.

What is the difference between the trim and wedge techniques?

A trim removes the excess along the edge of each labium. A wedge removes a V-shaped segment from the middle and joins the edges, keeping the natural edge. The choice depends on the shape of your labia and the look you want.

Can labiaplasty be done after childbirth?

Yes, usually once you have recovered from the birth and finished breastfeeding, often at least six months after delivery. If more babies are planned, it is usually better to wait.

Is there an age limit?

Labiaplasty is done for adults. Labia continue to change through the teenage years, and surgery is not done on girls under 18 for cosmetic reasons.
