Dermoid Cyst Removal in Pune: Complete Removal with a Fine Scar

Dermoid cyst removal takes out a benign cyst that has been present since birth, most often at the outer eyebrow, forehead, nose or scalp. The cyst is removed whole, with its wall, through a small cut placed in a skin crease or the eyebrow, and the skin is closed with fine stitches. It is usually day care.

Very minimal cut or small incision, closed with double-layered cosmetic sutures. A very thin, minimal scar is expected after surgery.

What is a dermoid cyst?

A dermoid cyst is a small, smooth, round lump present from birth, though it may only be noticed later as it grows. It forms when a small piece of skin is trapped beneath the surface while the face and head develop before birth. Because the lining is skin, the cyst fills slowly with the oily material and keratin that skin produces, and sometimes hair.

The most common site is the outer end of the eyebrow (an external angular dermoid). Others occur on the forehead, the nose, the scalp, behind the ear or in the neck. A dermoid cyst feels firm or rubbery, is not tender, and is often fixed to the bone below.

When is a scan needed?

Most dermoid cysts at the outer eyebrow can be removed without a scan. A scan (ultrasound, CT or MRI) is usually advised when a cyst:

  • lies on the midline, such as the nose or the centre of the scalp, where it may have a tract going deeper;
  • has a small pit with hair coming from it;
  • seems deep, or is fixed in an unusual way;
  • has come back after earlier surgery.

How is a dermoid cyst different from other lumps?

Lump Typical features
Dermoid cyst Present from childhood; outer eyebrow or midline; firm; often fixed to bone
Sebaceous (epidermoid) cyst Appears later in life; often a small dark opening; in the skin
Lipoma Soft, doughy, slips under the fingers
Granuloma Red, raised and bleeds easily

How is a dermoid cyst removed?

  1. Planning: the cut is planned in the eyebrow, an eyelid crease or a natural skin line so the scar is well hidden.
  2. Anaesthesia: local anaesthetic in adults; a short general anaesthetic in young children.
  3. Removal: the cyst is carefully freed from the tissue around it and lifted out whole, without bursting, so its wall is removed completely.
  4. Closure: the skin is closed in layers with fine stitches.
  5. Laboratory: the cyst is sent for examination to confirm the diagnosis.

How should you prepare, and what should you ask?

  • Bring any scan reports.
  • Tell the doctor about blood thinners and supplements that affect bleeding.
  • For children, follow the fasting instructions given for general anaesthesia.

Questions to ask:

  • Does this cyst need a scan before removal?
  • Where will the cut be, and how long will it be?
  • Will the stitches dissolve or need removing?

What is recovery like?

Time What to expect for most patients
Same day Home after the procedure; mild swelling and bruising, especially near the eye
Days 1-3 Keep the dressing dry; cold compresses for swelling
Days 5-7 Stitches removed, if not dissolvable
Weeks 2-4 Normal activity; protect the scar from sun
Months 1-12 The scar fades and softens

What are the risks?

  • Swelling and bruising, especially around the eye, usually settling within a week or two.
  • Infection, uncommon.
  • Visible or thick scar, uncommon on the face.
  • Recurrence, if the cyst wall bursts or part is left behind.
  • Injury to a small nerve, causing temporary numbness of the forehead, uncommon.

Contact the clinic for increasing pain, swelling, redness, discharge or fever.

What results can you expect?

The lump is gone, and a fine scar remains, usually placed where it is hard to see. The laboratory report confirms the diagnosis. Recurrence is uncommon after complete removal.

What affects the cost of dermoid cyst removal in Pune?

  • Size and site of the cyst.
  • Anaesthesia: local, or general for children.
  • Scans, if needed.
  • Laboratory examination and follow-up visits.

Questions about dermoid cyst

What is inside a dermoid cyst?

A dermoid cyst is lined with skin and can contain the things skin makes, such as a cheesy material, oil and sometimes hair. It forms before birth, when a small piece of skin becomes trapped under the surface as the face develops.

Is a dermoid cyst dangerous?

Dermoid cysts on the skin are benign. They tend to grow slowly and can become infected or burst under the skin, which causes inflammation. Some on the midline of the nose or scalp can connect deeper, which is why those may need a scan.

Does a dermoid cyst need to be removed?

Removal is usually advised because the cysts slowly enlarge, can erode the bone beneath, may become infected and do not go away by themselves. Removing a smaller cyst means a smaller cut.

Will there be a scar?

A fine scar remains, usually placed in the eyebrow, an eyelid crease or a natural skin line so it is hard to see. It is pink at first and fades over months.

At what age should a child's dermoid cyst be removed?

Timing is planned with the parents. Many are removed in early childhood, before they grow or become infected, under a short general anaesthetic.

Can a dermoid cyst come back?

If it is removed whole, with its wall, recurrence is uncommon. If the wall bursts or part is left behind, it can return.
