CO2 Laser Treatment in Pune: Fractional CO2 Laser for Scars and Skin

Fractional CO2 laser treatment makes thousands of tiny columns of controlled injury in the skin, leaving the skin between them intact. As the skin heals, it lays down new collagen and smoother skin. It is used for acne scars, other scars, enlarged pores, fine lines and rough texture, usually over three to five sessions a month or more apart.

What is fractional CO2 laser?

A carbon dioxide (CO2) laser produces a beam of light that is absorbed by water in the skin and vaporises a very small amount of tissue. In fractional treatment, the beam is split into thousands of microscopic columns. Each column creates a tiny channel, while the skin between the channels is left untouched. Because healthy skin surrounds every channel, the skin heals faster than after older, full-surface laser resurfacing.

As the skin heals over the following weeks, it remodels and makes new collagen. Scars become shallower and softer, pores look smaller and the surface becomes smoother.

Who may benefit, and how is suitability assessed?

Fractional CO2 laser may help:

  • acne scars, especially rolling and shallow boxcar scars;
  • surgical, injury and burn scars, to soften and flatten them;
  • self-harm scars, alone or with other methods;
  • enlarged pores, rough texture and fine lines;
  • some stretch marks, with modest improvement.

The doctor will look at your skin type, the kind of scars and any active acne, and ask about cold sores, isotretinoin, a tendency to dark marks or keloids, and sun exposure. Brown skin can be treated with adjusted settings and preparation.

What are the options for scars and skin texture?

Option What it can do Limitations
Fractional CO2 laser Improves scars, pores and texture; collagen remodelling Several sessions; downtime; pigment risk in brown skin
Dermabrasion Levels raised scar edges precisely Longer healing per session
Subcision and fat grafting Lift tethered and depressed scars Do not treat the surface
Microneedling, with or without PRP Gradual texture improvement Modest change; several sessions
Chemical peels Improve tone and fine texture Small effect on deeper scars

How is CO2 laser treatment performed?

  1. Cleaning and numbing: the skin is cleaned and numbing cream applied for about 45 minutes.
  2. Eye protection: you and the team wear protective eyewear or shields.
  3. Laser: the hand-piece is passed over the area in a planned pattern. Settings for depth and density are chosen for your scars and skin type.
  4. Cooling and care: the skin is cooled, and a soothing ointment and sunscreen are applied.

How should you prepare, and what should you ask?

  • Avoid sun tanning for several weeks before treatment.
  • Your doctor may advise a skin-preparation cream beforehand, especially for brown skin.
  • Tell the doctor about cold sores; preventive medicine may be given.
  • Ask your dermatologist how long to wait after isotretinoin.

Questions to ask:

  • How many sessions will I need, and how far apart?
  • What downtime should I plan for?
  • What is my risk of dark marks, and how will you reduce it?

What is recovery like?

Time What to expect for most patients
Days 1-2 Redness, swelling and a sunburn-like feel; gentle cleansing and ointment
Days 3-7 Skin darkens slightly and flakes; do not pick; strict sun protection
Weeks 1-2 Back to normal routine and make-up; pinkness fades
Weeks 4-8 Collagen remodelling continues; next session if planned

What are the risks of CO2 laser?

  • Redness and swelling, expected and temporary.
  • Darkening of the skin (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation), the most common problem in brown skin, usually temporary and treated with creams and sun protection.
  • Lightening of the skin, less common and sometimes longer-lasting.
  • Acne flare or milia.
  • Cold sore outbreak.
  • Infection, uncommon.
  • Scarring, rare with fractional treatment and appropriate settings.

Contact the clinic for increasing pain, blisters, yellow crusts, spreading redness or fever.

What results can you expect?

Scars look shallower and softer, the skin surface is smoother and pores look smaller. Improvement builds over the course of treatment and for several months after the last session. Results vary, and scars are improved rather than removed.

What affects the cost of CO2 laser treatment in Pune?

  • Area treated, such as the full face, cheeks only or a scar.
  • Number of sessions.
  • Combined treatments, such as subcision, fat grafting or PRP.
  • Skin preparation creams, aftercare products and review visits.

Laser treatment for scars after burns or injury may be considered by some insurers; cosmetic treatment usually is not covered.

Questions about fractional co2 laser

How many CO2 laser sessions are needed?

Many people need three to five sessions, four to eight weeks apart, for acne scars. Fine lines or open pores may need fewer. The plan depends on your scars, skin type and how your skin responds.

Is CO2 laser painful?

Numbing cream is applied for about 45 minutes first. Most people feel heat and prickling during treatment, and the skin feels like sunburn for a day or two afterwards.

Is CO2 laser safe for Indian skin?

It can be used with care. Brown skin has a higher risk of temporary darkening after laser, so settings are adjusted, sessions may be spaced further apart, and skin preparation and strict sun protection are advised.

Will CO2 laser remove acne scars completely?

No. It usually improves the texture and depth of scars, often noticeably, but does not remove them. Deep or tethered scars often do better with a combination of laser, subcision and fat grafting.

What is the downtime after fractional CO2 laser?

The skin is red and swollen for a few days, then darkens slightly and peels for about a week. Most people return to work after five to seven days, using make-up once the skin has healed.

Can CO2 laser be used on burn and surgical scars?

Yes. Fractional CO2 laser can soften and flatten burn and surgical scars and improve their texture. See burn scar treatment.
